This high-protein, low-calorie beef and sweet potato bowl is a simple and satisfying meal that delivers 40g of protein per serving and just 481 calories. It's a quick, easy dinner option that also works well for meal prep. The recipe combines savoury spiced beef, creamy cottage cheese, tender roasted sweet potatoes, and a sweet-and-spicy honey hot sauce. It comes together with just a few ingredients and minimal effort, making it perfect for busy weeknights or prepping meals in advance. For meal prep, store the sweet potato and beef together, and keep the avocado and cottage cheese separate until ready to serve.

The seasoning can be easily adjusted. While this version uses smoked paprika, garlic, and oregano, it also tastes great with added chilli powder, ground cumin, or ground coriander for a more complex flavour profile.

Ingredients

for the beef

  • 250g beef mince (ideally 5% fat)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Oil

for the sweet potato

  • 2 medium sweet potatoes, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • Oil

for the sides and toppings

  • 180g cottage cheese
  • 1 large avocado, diced or mashed
  • Hot sauce, to taste
  • Drizzle of honey

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (fan). Lightly oil a baking dish.
  2. Add the cubed sweet potatoes to the dish, sprinkle with 1 tsp garlic powder and salt. Roast for about 20 minutes, or until tender and golden.
  3. Heat a little oil in a large frying pan over high heat. Add the beef mince, season with salt and pepper, and cook until fully browned.
  4. Reduce heat to low. Stir in garlic powder, smoked paprika, and oregano. Cook for an additional 2–3 minutes.
  5. In a serving bowl, add the roasted sweet potato, beef, cottage cheese, and avocado.
  6. Drizzle with honey and hot sauce to taste. Enjoy warm!
